HOMES AND GARDENS OF HISTORIC INVERNESS

THERE WILL NOT BE A SPRING TOUR IN 2007.

We are very sorry to disappoint you.  Please check back with us next year for news about the 2008 tour. We are looking forward to spending another lovely spring day with you then.

Country aromas: bread baking, herbs drying, wood smoke.
Colorful gardens to work in or to relax and putter around.
Deep, soft sofas ready for a party ...or a nap on a rainy day.

Welcome to 8 remarkable country getaways built 100+ years ago for families wishing to leave the busy city for a simpler life. The integrity of Arts & Crafts architecture combines with the different lifestyles of occupants over the years to create individual indoor and outdoor living spaces capturing the “Sense of Place” and history unique to Inverness.

You are invited also to tour the public rooms and The Cabin at Manka's Inverness Lodge, built at the turn of the century and today so acclaimed that the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall stayed here on their 2005 visit.

Simple yet substantial, the family homes were designed by respected architects such as Ernest Coxhead.  The summer colony was built in the vernacular style using local forest materials and the skills of craftsmen and trades people already in place working for the large ranches.

The classic shingle and clapboard structures consequently blend easily into surrounding natural landscapes and nestle amicably together in the village setting.

Generations of the same families have contributed to the spirit of these homes. Interiors have evolved gently, layering tradition and memories with the demands of changing family lifestyles.  Each home is filled with history.

The gardens are inviting, much used living spaces suited to each owner’s lifestyle: ancient Bishop Pines embrace shady benches in contemplative corners; sunny decks burst with flower pots; patios showcase breathtaking views of Tomales Bay; colorful garden plantings thrive peaceably beside native vegetation.

So put your cares away and come spend a day in Old Inverness where the past anchors us in times of change… where the old and new, traditional and eccentric, humble and grand, wild and cultivated live happily together.

Tickets are $40 in advance; $45 at check-in if available (reserve early as space is strictly limited). The ticket price includes parking and use of our shuttle service to navigate narrow village lanes.

For lunch choose between a catered salad buffet at historic Inverness Yacht Club (pre-orders only) for $15, or stop and stroll down the charming byways of Old Inverness to purchase lunch at a welcoming eatery or to picnic al fresco.

All the tour locations are on uneven ground and many have steep staircases. Extensive walking is required to move between some of the houses as well as to fully enjoy deck and patio views. Sturdy, supportive shoes and walking sticks are advised.

The homes are not wheelchair or walker accessible. Children over 12 must have a ticket and be accompanied by an adult; and, please, absolutely no children under 12 or companion animals.

The tour is rain or shine. Be prepared for variable coastal weather. We recommend that you wear sunscreen, sensible shoes, a hat and layered clothing.
